Lipstick and flower on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A lipstick with a red tip and teal case decorated with swirling patterns rises from a pink and teal flower with a yellow centre and green leaves. Bold black outlines and flat, solid colour fills give it a classic traditional look, with a dotted circle floating above the lipstick. The design is centred on the forearm against a glittery backdrop.

The lipstick had lain in the drawer under the till since the spring the pier burned, and Mrs Okonedo never let anyone else touch it. Ruth found it wrapped in a headscarf when she came to clear the counter, the case still faintly chalky from the summer sun, the red tip worn into a slope like the bow of a boat.

Nobody in Wrenmouth remembered the shade's name, only that it had been mixed by a man who came over from Hull with a crate of bulbs and a tin of enamel. He had painted the case teal and pink, the colours of the fishing boats, and he had wanted it to smell of the flowers on the harbour wall. Ruth tried to read the faded label. Scarlet something. Beneath it, in pencil, a single word had been pressed hard into the card: Return.
She took it out to the front step, where the wind came off the water and riffled the parish notices. Ruth had decided, in the way you decide things at nineteen, that she would not sell the shop. She unscrewed the lipstick and drew a line across the back of her hand, a red as bold as a telegram. The gulls went quiet, the way they do before weather, and the lamp at the end of the breakwater swung its beam across the glass and settled overhead like a ring of bright beads.
Mrs Okonedo would have called it nonsense. Ruth put the cap back on, left the drawer open for whoever came next, and took a pot of red wax from the shelf to write the price on the window. Underneath, a little smaller, she wrote the word Stay.
