Gnarled tree tattoo across upper back

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A gnarled, leafless tree with twisting trunk and thin, spreading branches sits on a bare patch of upper back, with a few small rolled ground marks at its base. The linework is soft and sketchy, with grey shading on the trunk and fine stippled dots suggesting foliage or seeds in the upper branches. The photograph is black and white, framed from behind with a brick wall and open sky at the left edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maren Coyle had kept the light at Scarrow Head for thirty-one winters, and in all that time nothing grew on the headland but thrift and one blackthorn beside the oil store. The wind had bent it flat to the east, so it looked like a man leaning into rain. Each spring the keeper's nephew, Tobias, carried up a sack of seed from the village and scattered it along the cliff edge. Each spring the gulls ate it. Maren said the wind would kill anything that stood up straight, and the blackthorn had the sense to lie down.

One November the fog came in and stayed nine days. The foghorn groaned without stopping, and somewhere past the rocks the Lark of Ness was feeling her way home with no lantern showing. Maren climbed the tower every hour to turn the lamp by hand, while Tobias rang the handbell at the foot of the stair until his arms shook. On the ninth night a small yellow light came up through the murk, wavering, then steady, following the beam into the cove. Nobody drowned. Maren never spoke of it, though she kept the bell by her bed after that.

The next spring the blackthorn put out a single shoot that stood straight up, thin as a fishing line, and it went on climbing. Tobias ran to fetch her. She came out drying her hands on her apron and stood looking at it for a long while. Then she went into the store, came back with the spade, and told him to dig a ring of stones around the trunk so the wind could not get at its roots. They worked until dusk.

By the next winter the tree had grown a crown of thin branches, bare as the rest of the headland. When the wind came off the sea, the seeds shook loose from the upper twigs and blew out over the cliff in a fine grey spray. Maren said that was the only way to keep a light burning out there: give the seed to the wind and trust it to find the rocks. Tobias never knew whether she meant the tree or herself.
