Goggled dog with Wanderer's Best Friend banner
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A dog wearing goggles and a collar-like strap faces left with its mouth open, shown from the shoulders up. A ribbon banner across the lower half reads Wanderer's Best Friend, and two rosettes labelled Nuka sit beside the head with small diamond shapes scattered around. The design is drawn in black ink with fine hatching and cross-hatching on white, with no colour.

Sit closer, the fire is only just catching, and I'll not tell the back half of this to people who fidget. You know the road that bends past the salt flats of Hollowmere? Along it walked a wanderer called Tamsin Greave, who had one boot, one brass watch and no fixed address, and who travelled with a dog called Pell.

Pell wore goggles. Nobody in Ostry could say where she got them, though the smith at the crossroads swore they were the lenses from a dead man's signal lamp, and that the dead man had no further use for them. Pell never cared for the story. She cared for the wind, which she met every morning with her muzzle lifted and her tongue lolling, as if the two of them had made a bargain long ago and neither had ever broken it.
They came one autumn to Carrow Bridge, where the mayor had pinned two rosettes to his wool coat and offered them to whoever could find the river's lost bell. Tamsin found it in the reeds. Pell found the mayor's pocket watch, which she carried across the square to the wrong man on purpose, and by nightfall the whole town was arguing about who had really been clever.
When the mayor asked what reward a woman with one boot could want, Tamsin said she only wished the road kept open. Pell barked once, sharp, as if to say the same. The mayor laughed, then stopped laughing, because he had finally noticed which of them had been walking ahead all along. Let the banners say what they like. I know who kept the map.
