Tribal wolf head design
Black and grey · Flash
A front-facing wolf head drawn as a tattoo design, with the ears, eyes and fur rendered as flowing tribal swirls and spikes. The work uses solid black linework and fills on a plain white background, with no shading or grey tones. The composition is centred and symmetrical, with the muzzle and nose as the central solid black shape.

The wolf came up the service stairs at ten past three, the night the north lift stuck between floors with a trolley of clean linen inside it. Nell Harker heard its claws on the lino before she saw it, a soft tick and scrape like a key dragged along railings. She was mopping the corridor outside the children's ward, and she stood with the bucket and let it pass. It was black and white and perfectly still, its ears curling up and over in spirals like a ram's horn, and its eyes were two bright hollows the strip light could not reach.

Her gran always said a wolf that walks a hospital has come to sit with someone. So Nell followed it. It went past the nurses' station, where Gary was asleep over the drug log, past the vending machine that hummed, and stopped at bed four. An old fisherman lay there, a man who had talked all week about the tide at Sennen. The wolf settled along the edge of the blanket, its fur fanned into tapering spikes, and did not move again.
Nell worked the rest of the shift with her back to that bed, because it was not her business to watch. At six the day sister came on and complained about the lift. When Nell passed bed four at quarter past seven, the chair was empty, the blanket was folded square, and the old man was sitting up, asking the healthcare assistant for a cup of tea.
On the windowsill, where the light from the car park came through the blind, lay one black strand of fur curled into a perfect swirl. Nell pocketed it, meaning to show Gary. She never did.
