Gold vine tattoo on upper back

Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo

A bare upper back shows two curling vine motifs with leaves and scrolls, one on the left of the spine and one on the right near the shoulder. The linework is fine and smooth, and the design appears in a metallic gold tone against the skin. The composition is centred on the shoulder blade with a plain, softly lit background and a dark strapless garment at the bottom edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lift on the eleventh floor of Harlow House had been dead since Tuesday, so Dilys carried the gold leaf up the stairs in a biscuit tin, one flight at a time. Mr Anand on the ninth was waiting with the kettle on and a question about his wife's rose, which had pushed a green tendril through the balcony railings and into the flat below.

The leaf came from the sign-writer's shop on Cable Street, where her uncle had gilded shop fronts for forty years before his hands started to shake. She laid each sheet on the sill and lifted it with a brush of squirrel hair, and the morning light caught the metal and held it. Vines were easy, she told him. They only wanted to climb, and a wall was just a rail they hadn't reached yet.

Mrs Anand had died in March. The rose had gone in the week they moved here, and he had let it run wild because cutting it back felt like losing her twice. Dilys didn't offer him anything soft. She rolled a curl of leaf between finger and thumb, asked him which way the plant was leaning, and waited while he thought about it.

By evening the gold ran from the railing to the top corner of the window frame, curling where the rose had curled and stopping where it wanted to stop. Mr Anand came out in his slippers to look at it under the streetlamp. He stood there a long time, then went back in and came out again with a pair of scissors, and cut only the brown leaves.
