White ink feather on the ribs
Dotwork · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A large feather with swirling, paisley-like ornament runs diagonally across the side of the torso. The tattoo is done in white or pale cream ink, so the linework shows as a raised, light pattern against the skin. Fine lines and small dots fill the feather's vanes, and a red garment sits at the left edge of the frame.

The gull-ringing season had turned cold by the time Ada Morrow found the feather on the rocks below the old chapel. It was longer than her hand, its vanes pale to begin with, the colour of skimmed milk, and the sea had worn them nearly to nothing. She carried it up the cliff path in her coat pocket, where it kept snagging on the wool.

At the bird station, Tom Gair was already at the kettle, complaining about the wind. She laid the feather on the sill between the ringing pliers and a jar of dried sorrel. Tom held it to the window and turned it slowly, so the light came through the barbs and showed a scatter of raised marks, curls that spiralled inward and small dots pressed along the edges. "Someone's been at that with a very fine nib," he said. "Or the sea did it."
Ada thought of the ledger on the shelf, the one the old keeper, Walter Lunan, had filled with notes for forty years. In the margins beside each lost bird he had drawn the same spirals, always in pencil, always pressed so hard the paper dented. She fetched it down and found the page for the spring of 1961, where a single pale feather had been pinned beneath a strip of tape with the words *kept for the light*.
She pinned the new feather beside it. By noon the sun had shifted, and the marks lifted from the paper like breath on glass, so that for a few minutes the two feathers looked like one bird that had come back to the island.
