Golden snitch with script on the lower back

Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo

A golden snitch with shaded grey feathered wings sits on the left, with the script words "It's Real For Us" curving to its right. The wings have pencil-like grey shading and fine feather detail, while the ball is rendered in gold with darker outlines and highlights. The tattoo is centred on bare skin at the waist, with a dark garment visible along the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell Fenwick kept the light at Scarrow Head for thirty-one years, and in all that time she never once saw a golden thing come up out of the sea. Her grandson Tobias did not believe her when she said the old keepers had. He was nine that autumn and certain of everything, the way boys are before the weather teaches them otherwise.

One evening in October a storm came in from the west and the lamp began to flicker. Tobias ran down the rocks after a gull-hook he had lost, and there in the kelp below the lowest step sat a ball no bigger than a plum, gold as a coin left out in the sun. Two wings folded flat against it, thin as wet paper, grey at the centre and feathered along the edges like a moth's.

He reached for it. It shook itself, lifted, and went past his ear so close he felt the air move. He slipped on the weed and sat down hard, and when he looked up the thing was circling the beam above the rocks, catching the light and throwing it back in small bright sparks. Nell came out with the paraffin can and stood beside him with her hand on her hip.

"Leave it be," she said. "It has only come to see the light."

After that Tobias sat on the bottom step most nights with his jacket buttoned to the chin. At school he told them the golden thing was real, and they laughed, and he let them. Some nights, when the beam swept round over the water, a small gold spark turned in it, and he lifted his hand to it the way you wave at someone who has seen you too.
