Winged angel figure on upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A seated winged figure sits with its knees drawn up and its head bowed, partly hidden by the wings that spread out on either side. The feathers and body are built from soft grey shading with darker lines for definition. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a pale background of skin.

The shop has been yours since March, when the lease came up and nobody else wanted the night hours. You learned the bench from him, the way he would fold himself over a bowl of dough with his shoulders drawn up and his head bent low, as though the loaf were something sleeping that must not be woken. You do it now without thinking. The radio murmurs the shipping forecast to nobody. Flour settles on your forearms like a second skin, and you let it stay.

At ten to five three slow knocks come at the back door. You open it expecting the milk lorry. Nobody is there, only the step, and on it a child's bicycle lying on its side, its back wheel still turning a little in the damp. You lift it upright and stand in the cold a long moment, listening to the street wake. Then you go back inside and set the kettle on, and through the open hatch you watch the dark start to thin over the rooftops, while the rye goes on rising in its basket.
