Black and grey thigh tattoos on a person seen from behind in sheer lace underwear, with Good Girl script and floral and bird designs.

Good Girl lettering on both thighs

Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The photo shows the backs of both thighs, with the lower buttocks covered by sheer light blue lace. The script reading Good Girl sits across the upper thighs, with a skull or figure design, flowers and a bird below it. The tattoos are shaded in black and grey with a small amount of red detail, and a tiled bathroom wall and tap are visible in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gallery on the north pier had been losing its shine since the war, so when Mrs Hollis came asking for a board to hang above the rifles, Mr Dorrell sent me instead of going himself. He said a girl could manage the flourishes. I was nineteen and had never painted anything bigger than a bread van.

She wanted two words only, GOOD GIRL, with a skull tucked beneath for the ones who had been warned. Under that she asked for a bird, a wren or a swallow, I forget which, and a band of roses that wound round the letters as if holding them up. I chalked the design through from brown paper and worked the capitals in cream enamel with a sable so fine it barely held a bead. Mr Dorrell came back at four, thumbs in his waistcoat, and said my G was too round. He was right. I went over it until it sat like a hoop.

The board went up on the Saturday. Lads down from the mill towns shot tin ducks beneath it, and the old women on the benches laughed at the skull, then looked at it longer than they meant to. Mrs Hollis took a photograph with a borrowed box camera the week before the pier fire and sent me a print, the only thing I ever got for the work.

The gallery burned in 1961 with the board still on the wall. What outlasted it was the G. When customers ask why my G curls back on itself, I tell them it was drawn for lads on the pier, who needed a second look to find the target.
