Gothic spired city on a thigh
Blackwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a skyline of tall pointed spires, arched windows and a gothic cathedral-like building, with two crescent moons and horizontal bars above it. The linework is bold and solid black with flat fills and no shading, and the image is entirely black and grey. The tattoo fills the outer thigh, with a second tattooed arm and a hand resting on the leg at the top left of the frame.

The bell rope has frayed again, and you are the one who must splice it before Sunday, because your father's hands shake now and nobody else in the village ties a proper knot. You climb the tower at the edge of Hallow Wood with a coil of tarred hemp over your shoulder. Through the louvred gap you can see past the last oaks to the mere, where mist lies flat as a sheet of pewter.

That evening the mist lifts and there it is on the far shore: a city standing on the water, its spires stacked like the teeth of a comb, arched windows lit from nowhere, a cathedral at its heart with a black slab of roof. Two crescent moons hang over it, one on either side, as if the sky had been cut to fit around the towers. The innkeeper's daughter says it is the city the drowned men were building before the water took them. You say nothing and keep your eyes on the path.
You go back to the tower at midnight with a lantern and the splice half done. The strands will not lie true in your hands. Each one wants to run straight and level, like the bars drawn across the sky, and every time you pull tight the city sharpens on the water below. You understand, slowly, that it only shows to someone who is counting the hours until morning.
You finish the splice at first light and tie off the end the way your father taught you. When you look across the mere the spires are gone, and the reeds stand grey and ordinary in the cold. On Sunday the bell rings true for the first time in a year, and somewhere out past the trees, a single pale moon hangs in the daylight, waiting for the next rope to fray.
