Chandelier tattoo on an upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo of an ornate chandelier with a central column, curved arms, drop crystals and strings of beads hanging beneath. The linework is fine and precise, with light stippled shading giving the glass and metal some depth. The design is centred on the outer upper arm and shoulder, with the subject's black sleeveless top and a thin necklace visible at the edge of the frame against a plain, dimly lit room.

The crate came through at twenty past four, when the lorries had thinned and frost was sweating off the barrier. It was stencilled GLASS, THIS WAY UP, in a hand that had pressed too hard on the marker. Dariusz, who had the hatch that night, wanted to wave it through. I wanted to see inside.

Under three blankets and a drift of newspaper from a city I had never visited, a chandelier lay taken apart with great care. The central column sat in a bed of straw. The curved arms were bundled like cutlery, each candle cup wrapped on its own, and the strings of beads hung in loops from a wooden batten. Someone had numbered the drops in pencil on strips of masking tape. The manifest said two hundred and twelve. I counted two hundred and eleven, and the tape on the last gap was still tacky, as though it had only just been peeled from the roll.

The driver, a quiet man called Oszkar, watched me count and said the house had been sold to people who wanted nothing from its old rooms. Then he reached into his coat and set the missing drop on the steel counter between us. It was a teardrop of cut glass no longer than my little finger, and it caught the yard lights and threw a small wet star across the manifest. He said his wife had asked him to bring it, and that she had no use for it herself.

I wrote the discrepancy in the margin, stamped the sheet, and let the crate through. As the barrier lifted, the lights of the yard swung across the open lid, and for a moment every bead in those loops flashed at once, like a ballroom coming back on.
