Snow had closed the pass for three days, and Mrs Ada Fenwick had run out of patience before she ran out of coal. In the back parlour of the Coldharbour Inn she sorted the guests' letters into the pigeonholes behind the bar, and found a copybook wedged behind the ledger, its marbled cover gone soft as bread.

The inside was all handwriting drill. Line after line, a child had copied the same four words, grace upon grace, the loops of the g's growing tidier down the page until they stood up straight and sure. In the margin, in a grown hand she recognised as her mother's, someone had written: Let her keep at it. The ink had bled into the paper where the nib had rested too long.

Ada had been called a stubborn girl since she could hold a spoon. Her mother had said the same about her handwriting and made her write the phrase until her wrist ached. She had hated it then. Now she sat at the bar with the lamp hissing and the wind pushing at the shutters, and she copied the line herself on the back of an unpaid bill, slowly, the way she had been taught.

By morning the drifts had reached the sill of the coach house. The first sledge came up the lane with the post, and the carter stamped in with his cap in his hands and asked what the strange old book was doing on her counter. She showed him the margin. He read it twice, nodded as if it were a weather forecast, and paid for his tea in coppers. Ada tucked the copybook under her arm and went to find a pen that still worked.
