Close-up of a fine black script tattoo reading Yahweh on the inner forearm, in a Lettering style.

Yahweh script on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black script word, Yahweh, is written in a thin, flowing hand across the forearm of a person wearing a red top and dark jeans. The linework is even and fine, with no shading, and the lettering sits along the arm. The photograph is warm-toned and taken indoors, with the ink standing out clearly against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Okonedo never let me use the sable on a name until I had written it a hundred times on brown paper, and even then he would turn the sheet over and say, "Again, Tom. The letter doesn't care how tired you are." The shop on Harehills Road had been his father's, and the fascia above the door still read Okonedo & Sons in gold leaf that had faded to the colour of weak tea.

The job that spring was a funeral parlour in Chapeltown that wanted its name run along the front window in a hand that looked as if it had been written on the glass in one breath. Mr Okonedo drew it out on card first, then made me ink it over his pencil. Thin strokes, leaning forward, the loops closing just so. I got the h wrong twice. Each time he took the card to the back door, held it against the light, and said nothing, which was worse than shouting.

On the last morning he came in late with a bag of pear drops and sat on the stool by the paint pots. He watched me lay the final stroke along the glass and said I had stopped flinching. I told him I had only stopped breathing. He laughed, properly, the first time I had heard it, and then he said the hand was mine now and I should stop asking whose it had been before.

When the gold dried that afternoon I walked the length of the street twice, reading the letters backwards from the pavement, and they looked as though they had always been there.
