Gradient skull smoking a cigarette on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A skull in profile with a cigarette between its teeth sits above a segmented spine, set against a black triangular panel. The skull has smooth dotted shading that fades from pink at the top to teal and yellow below, and a white and grey scroll of smoke curls up the right side of the panel. The bold black outlines and saturated colour contrast with the solid black background.

The third tray is already catching at the edges when Dolores bangs on the back door and yells that the milk van has slid into the drain at the end of Tanners Lane. You don't turn round. You are watching the flue above the oven, where the first smoke of the day is pushing grey and slow past the brick. Your father used to say a baker's chimney was the only honest thing on the street, because it told everyone exactly how hot the night had been.

Dolores comes in with flour up to her elbows and a face like a slammed drawer. Between you, you get the cooling racks wheeled out and the last rye loaves tapped for their hollow sound, the way he taught you, knocking on the crust like a man checking a door. The windows go from black to the colour of a bruise, then to a green that reminds you of the old sign above the shop, the one with the skull grinning round its breadstick, painted by a man who charged by the letter. Nobody else in Tanners Lane is awake yet. The gulls are, and they are furious about it.
When the milk finally arrives, warm and sour from the ditch, you have already pulled the batch that matters. The paper bags are stacked by the door, each stamped with the skull and its curl of smoke, the same design your father had done on his own forearm the year he quit and swore the shop would be the only thing he ever kept burning. You fold the top of a bag over a bun, press it shut, and listen to the flue draw one long breath above the roofs. Outside, the first customer is already tapping on the glass.
