Horned skull dotwork on thigh

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A skull with curved horn-like shapes rising from the top of the head, shown in a front-facing view on the thigh. The skull is built from fine stippled dots and solid black areas, with faceted, fragmented edges along the jaw and cheekbones. Behind it, a large dotted crescent fades out toward a pale circle, and the background is plain skin with soft natural lighting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody at Carrow Bridge halt had seen the moon since the signal wires were strung, so when Mrs Pell began keeping the lamp lit on the platform bench, I took it for superstition and said nothing. The lamp was mine to trim, and the last up train was mine to see off, and I had no interest in anything else.

The trouble began in October, when the night mail stopped short of the platform with its engine breathing steam and no driver in the cab. Its brass plate read "Moonward Express", a name no timetable had ever carried. I walked the length of it with my hand on the cold rail, counting carriages, and found the last compartment full of fine grey dust that lifted in the lamplight like smoke from a snuffed wick.

On the seat lay a skull, horned at the crown like a ram's, its jaw cracked and bound with copper wire. Beneath it was a pale disc of card with a crescent pricked into it, the holes so fine they caught the light in a ring of dots. I understood then that the train ran for whoever carried the moon, and that the moon had been waiting on a platform for someone to take a ticket.

I bought one. I still have the stub. I stood on the empty bench under the lamp and let the dust settle on my shoes, and when the engine pulled away it took the night with it, leaving the sky over Carrow Bridge bright and unbroken for the first time in forty years.
