Maud Ferrier kept a stall of painted glass under the railway arches, and every night at half eleven she'd close her shutter and wait for the horse. Nobody saw it come. There was only a smell of wet hay rising off the cobbles, and then a pale head would lean over the railings, the horn catching the sodium light like a sewing needle dipped in frost.

The colours were the trouble. The horse was not one colour. It was all of them at once, rose at the cheek, plum down the neck, and a blue at the end of the tail that ran off into nothing like ink in a bath. Maud tried to sketch it on the back of a receipt and gave up. You cannot put a blend like that on paper with a biro. She asked it what it wanted. It only shook its mane, and specks of dark light flew off and stuck to the brickwork like soot that twinkled.

So she fetched the spare glass, the offcuts she'd never sold, and set them in a bowl on the kerb. The horse drank nothing, but it tilted its head at her as if she were the strange one. By morning every shard had gone, and the stall had one new pane in the window, shot through with rose and violet, and on it, if you held it up to the lamp, the faint pale shape of a horse looking back at the city.
