Ada had mixed the pink three times before the owner stopped hovering at the lock gate. "Make it a horse," Mr Telford called down from the towpath. "Proper bay, like the old cart horses." She kept her brush moving across the panel, a plank of seasoned oak screwed above the stove, and said nothing about what she was painting.

The paint came from a tin of leftover sign-writer's enamel her father had bought for a boat that never sailed. Violet, then a cool blue that bled into the wet pink like weather moving over water. She blended with the flat of the brush, lifting the edges so the mane looked like smoke caught on the wind. Nobody on a narrowboat asks for a unicorn, but the Telford girl, Poppy, had drawn one on every page of her school jotter and pressed it against the cabin window that morning, so Ada had decided the boat would have one too.

When the horn was done, a thin white spiral with a single glint left unpainted, Poppy climbed up the back step and studied it with her chin on the rail. "It's pointing the wrong way," she said. "It should point at the water so it knows where to go."

Ada looked at the horn, then at the brown canal stretching back towards Stourport, and dipped her brush one last time. She turned the spiral to face the current, added a dot of silver at the tip, and let the light from the lock do the rest.
