The rain has been coming sideways since six, and by ten the gutters of the Thursday market are running like rivers. You stand under the awning with a crate of mackerel on your hip while Ada Lusk hoses down the slab. Above her head, someone long gone has painted five Greek letters on a strip of tin, the paint worn to a ghost where the damp gets in.

She taught you to read them the first winter you worked for her, tapping each one with a wet knuckle. Iota, chi, theta, upsilon, sigma. Five letters that spell a word, she said, and the word is a fish. Her father had a theory that the stallholders in the old row used them as a secret, a way to tell a friend from a tax man. You never believed him. You believed the tin.
Customers come and go under the dripping plastic. A boy wants two herrings wrapped in yesterday's paper. A woman in a yellow mac asks what the letters mean, and you tell her what Ada told you, that it is an old shorthand, and she nods as if that settles things. Ada wipes her hands on her apron and says nothing, which is how she agrees with people.
When the rain finally eases you climb the ladder to fix the tin where a nail has lifted. The letters catch the grey light, every edge clean and dark. You press the nail home with the heel of your hand, and the last drip runs past your sleeve onto the slab below. Ada says, without looking up, that the fish always finds its way back to the water.
