XO lettering with red heart on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows the letters X and O in bold black ink, with a small solid red heart sitting above and between them. The linework is fairly heavy and hand drawn, with slightly uneven edges. The skin fills most of the frame against a dark background, with the tattoo centred on the wrist.

The lift has been out since Tuesday, so you climb the stairs to the fourteenth floor with a carrier bag whose handles are splitting. On the landing by the bins someone has taped a sheet of lined paper to the breeze block. LIFT BROKEN, SORRY, it says, and beneath that, in biro pressed so hard it has torn the page, XO. Nobody on this estate signs anything with kisses. You stand there longer than you mean to, bag cutting into your fingers.

The notes keep coming. Each morning there is another: a cheese plant tied to the stair rail with green string, a plea for whoever took the blue bucket to bring it back, always the same two letters at the bottom. The handwriting belongs to Mrs Okafor in 9B, who is eighty-one and has written letters to the council so often that the caretaker now replies to her before she has finished posting them. On the Thursday you knock on her door with a tin of custard creams you did not really want to share.
She lets you in and makes tea strong enough to stand a spoon in. Her kitchen window looks straight across at the car park, where a gull is working through a bag of chips. The X, she tells you, is for the things you cross out when you have finished with them. The O is for the things that keep rolling back to you. She pours a second cup without asking whether you want one.
On the way out you borrow the pen from her hall table and write a note of your own under hers. Your letters come out wobbly, nothing like hers. Then, because it seems the right thing to add, you draw a small red heart with the felt tip from your coat pocket. Behind you, far down the shaft, the lift gives a single cough and begins to climb.
