Green dragon with red clouds on an arm
Japanese · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A green dragon with a scaled body, pale feathery whiskers and a clawed foreleg wraps around the arm, with its head facing towards the top of the frame. Dense, smooth shading and bold outlines define the scales and fur, with pale highlights on the eye and horns. Red and grey clouds fill the lower and upper areas, and a black swirl sits at the top, all set against a plastic-covered background.

The carter had been three days on the salt road when the dragon first came down out of the red cloud, and he said afterwards that it was not the size of it that frightened him but the whiskers, which were white and fine as thistle seed and moved although there was no wind.

It lay along the rim of the gully the way a cat lies along a wall, its scales the green of pond weed in a shaded ditch, each one ringed with a paler yellow. One clawed foreleg hung over the edge, the claws curled like a pair of tongs. The carter had a sack of millet, two goats and a boy named Teodor who was sick with the heat, and no coin for a toll he did not owe. So he took off his hat and asked the dragon what it wanted from a road that belonged to nobody.
The dragon said it wanted only a drink, and the road had none. The carter laughed until he saw it was serious. Then he understood the clouds: they had been following the road for a week, low and red as cut meat, because the rain had gone into the dragon's mouth and had not come back out.
He unloaded the millet, tied the goats together and walked the dragon's shadow to the dry riverbed, where a spring still ran under the stones. The dragon drank for an hour. When it lifted its head, water ran off the whiskers in strings, and the cloud broke open over the valley for the first time in two years. The carter never saw it fly. He only saw the green tail going up into the rain, and the boy, awake now and sitting up, pointing and shouting for him to look.
