Grey cats and stars along a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A phone photograph of an arm carrying a column of grey cats in stretched and curled poses, running from the elbow towards the wrist. The cats are outlined with shaded grey tones, while small orange and teal stars, bows, hearts and dots fill the spaces around them. The background shows a room with a television and a vase of flowers, and the tattoo fills most of the frame.

Dear Winnie, you will not believe what came up the back stairs of the Palais on Tuesday. Six grey cats, one after another, stretched out long like washing on a line, tails high, as if someone had told them the band was about to play and they wanted a good view. Mr Okonedo swore they came up through the coal chute. Mrs Ferris swore they were the ghosts of her late husband's old flames. I think they were simply looking for somewhere warm, which is more than the rest of us can say this winter.

They would not leave. They sat along the rim of the bandstand between sets and watched the couples go round, and when the floor emptied they climbed the velvet curtains and hung there with their paws out, looking for all the world as though they meant to reach the glitter ball. Mr Okonedo gave them the spare paper streamers, and the girls from the ticket booth tied bows of red ribbon round their necks. After the Saturday dance we swept up a scatter of little orange stars and teal hearts from under the chairs, and nobody could say where they had come from.
On the last night before the council man came round, I found the grey one with the crooked ear asleep in the cloakroom, right on top of Dad's old dancing shoes. I hadn't the heart to shift her. I sat with her until the last waltz finished through the wall, and I thought about you and me on the cold kitchen lino, Mam humming while we turned in circles until we fell over laughing. Nobody dances like that now, but the cats seem to have learnt the steps.
The council man took one look, laughed, and said they could stay until spring if someone fed them. So I am the one feeding them. Come up at Easter and see for yourself. Bring the good scissors, the ribbons want replacing. Love, Ada.
