Grey floral tattoo across neck and shoulder

Botanical · Neck · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo covers the back of the neck and across the shoulder blade, showing large chrysanthemum-style flowers with leaves and small insects, including two ants and a beetle. The petals and leaves are built from soft grey shading and fine linework, with a few magenta-purple blooms adding colour. The flowers trail diagonally from the neck down over the shoulder, with the person's head and face out of frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The beetle came to our village the summer the well went dry, and my mother said it was the only creature in the valley with any sense, because it went where the water had been. I was nine. I followed it up past the last cottage, past the tannery smell, into the beech wood where the old nursery had gone to seed. Nobody had tended it since Mr Halloran died. The chrysanthemums had grown wild over the stone walls, grey-green and heavy, their petals folded like the pages of a book somebody had left out in the rain.

Two ants were working the lowest bed, carrying seed heads twice their size up a stalk and down again. I asked them what they were doing. The taller one stopped, turned its head, and said nothing, which I took as an answer. The beetle settled on a magenta bloom the colour of a bruise and waited for me to understand something I was too young to understand. I went home without speaking of it.

When the rains came back in October, the walls were green again and the nursery had flowered thick as wool. My mother walked me up with a basket and we cut only what the ants had left us. She never asked how I had known where to look. She simply said that the dahlias always remember who was kind to them, and that the insects keep the accounts, and that a fair gardener pays what she owes before the frost comes.
