Dutch-style floral still life across a upper back
Realism · Back · Colour · Photo
A large floral still life covers the upper back, with peonies, tulips, roses, morning glories and a butterfly arranged in a dense, bouquet-like cluster. Blue ribbons or bows sit at both shoulders, and clusters of grapes and dark foliage fill the lower edges. Soft shading and fine detail give the flowers a painted, classical look, in pinks, reds, yellows, greens and blues on bare skin against a dark background.

The bouquet was wrong from the first morning, and Jan Haas knew it while he ground the lapis for the ribbons. Tulips came up in April on Schouwen and morning glories waited for August, yet Master Verhoef had set both in the same stone jug on the sill, with a peony bought from a Middelburg dealer at a price that would have kept Jan's mother for two winters. A painting, the master said, is not a almanac. Nobody comes to a still life to be told the month.

Catharina van Ede came on the third Tuesday to sit with her husband's commission and asked him, politely, why the grapes were so dark and so ripe when the vines had not yet fruited. Verhoef smiled and said the grapes were for the eye, not the mouth. Jan, mixing the green for the foliage, kept his face still. In the pocket of his smock he carried a striped tulip bulb the dealers called broken, the flame-coloured feathering that no one could explain, and he had been turning it over all week like a stone from the beach.
When the canvas dried, Verhoef scraped a small tortoiseshell butterfly from the tulip's edge because it distracted from the peony. Jan painted it back at night by the light of a tallow stub, a little lower, so it rested on the petal as if it had only just landed. In the morning the master found it, studied it for a long while, and said nothing at all.
Catharina paid in silver and hung the piece above her sideboard. Jan walked home along the dyke with the bulb cupped in his hand. He planted it that evening in a box beneath his window, where it would flower in April, long after the ribbon had faded and the grapes had gone soft on the canvas.
