Guitarist portrait in UV ink on a leg

Calf · Colour · Photo

A portrait of a man in a headband playing an electric guitar, with musical notes drifting beside him. The figure is shaded with soft gradients and outlined in glowing neon tones, and the guitar neck runs diagonally down the design. Under blacklight the pink, green, orange and yellow inks fluoresce against a deep purple and blue background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dessie Rourke had been told twice by the landlord that the blacklight came off at midnight, and twice he had nodded and carried on up the stepladder. The Cardigan Rooms smelled of spilt lager and warm dust. Above the stage, a wall the colour of wet slate was still bare in places, and he had three hours to finish the figure before the Salt Tuesdays arrived for their soundcheck.

His sister Marnie held the torch steady while he worked a guitar neck down the plaster in long diagonal strokes. The paint came from a tin she had bought off a sign-writer in Margate, thick and faintly sweet, and it looked like nothing at all until the light went violet. Ray Oduya, the band's guitarist, had come by on Tuesday and watched for a long time without speaking. Then he had said, "Make the notes look like they're leaving him." Dessie had not understood that until now.

On Friday the room filled fast. When the lights dropped and the UV tubes hummed on, the wall lit up like something underwater: a man bent over his guitar, his mouth open mid-song, pink and green lines rolling off his shoulders into the dark. The crowd went quiet in the way Dessie had hoped for. Ray played the first chord and the notes seemed to lift from the plaster, sliding toward the ceiling.

After the last encore the house lights came up and the room looked ordinary again, sticky and grey. Dessie stayed behind to coil cable. In the corner, Ray sat on an amp with a cold tea, staring at the wall. The figure was dull now, almost gone. Then Dessie noticed one green note still glowing faintly near the ceiling, long after the tubes were off, as if it had decided to keep going on its own.
