Blackwork moon, mountains and animal head on forearm
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a moon or sphere with a geometric symbol and stars at the top, with mountain peaks and an animal head with a long snout and horns below. Solid black ink fills the background, and the subjects are picked out in fine light grey or white linework with some engraved-style hatching. The design fills the forearm in a vertical composition against a pale background.

You arrive on Harrow Skerry the week the moon goes thin, carrying a tin of tea and a logbook nobody has written in since spring. The previous keeper left the lamp turning on its own weights, and the first thing you learn is that the light is not for ships. It is for the thing that climbs the rock on the dark of the moon, a long-snouted ram with horns like rusted hooks, which comes up the wet slate as if the sea had grown legs.

The logbook explains more than the keeper did. Every entry ends with the same three squares drawn in pencil, a small lattice like the lens housing, and a tally of stars. Under the last one someone has written: it wants the lamp out, not lit. You laugh at that, then climb the spiral stair with a torch and find the great lens already dark, its brass cold, a fine crust of salt on the glass like frost on a window.
When you come back down, the ram is standing on the gallery, its breath steaming in the lantern light, its horns catching the grey of the mainland peaks that show over the water. It does not charge. It looks at you the way the old keepers must have looked at the sky, patiently, counting. You understand that you have been asked a question about who keeps watch for whom.
You do not light the lamp. You sit on the iron step with your back against the cold wall, and when the moon finally clears the cloud above the mountains, round and hard as a coin, the ram lowers its head and walks back into the sea without a splash. In the morning you write one line in the book, the first in months: Lamp left dark. Watch kept.
