Hamsa hand with eye design
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical hamsa hand outlined with a dotted border, filled with mandala-like patterns, leaf sprigs on the fingers and scrollwork on the thumb and little finger. A detailed eye sits at the centre of the palm, shaded in grey with fine black linework. The drawing is in black and grey on a textured, slightly stained beige background, centred in the frame.

Nell Ashcombe climbed the track from Wrenfield with a tin of lamp black and a brush wrapped in greaseproof paper, the frost still silvering the bracken where the forest began. The Pruett boy had come down the lane twice that week saying the lamplighter's cottage watched him the way a cat watches a mouse. Nobody in the village laughed about it any more.

She had her grandmother's stencil, a hand with five fingers spread, cut from an old tea tin. Pressing it to the damp boards, she thought of the trees behind her, where the oaks grew so close the path closed up after you, and of what her grandmother used to say: the eye sees you looking, so give it something to count. Nell drew the palm first, then the leaves on the fingers, curling like bracken fronds, then the rings and paisley drops that filled the middle, each one a slow stitch of care.
At the centre she left a space for the eye. Her hand wavered. Her grandmother had always done the eye herself. Mabel Cready came out on the step with a cup of tea and watched. "You'll not get it right first time," she said. "Nobody does." Nell dipped the finest brush and drew the lid, then the iris, shading the grey darker in the corners where the light would never reach.
When she stood back, the eye seemed to look up past her at the forest, as if it had been there all along. Mabel set her cup down and said nothing. Nell packed the tin, the stencil and the brush, and walked home the long way round the trees without once looking over her shoulder, because the eye was doing the looking now.
