Eye in a mandala with cloud scrolls

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows an open eye with a radiating sun-ray motif, set inside a teardrop-shaped mandala with a smaller eye above it. Cloud-like scrolls frame the central motif and the outer edges are outlined in bold black. The shading is built from stippled dots and solid black fills, with the white paper left as the highlight areas.

Mother Stennet had told them for years that the wood above Hollin Edge kept an eye, and that it only opened when the sun found its way through the scrolled cloud sitting in the beeches. Nobody in the village believed her, which is why nobody went to look when the miller's boy failed to come home from the fell.

Ada went. She was twelve, the baker's daughter, and she had a loaf in her satchel that she had taken from Harwood's cart that morning without paying, because she had wanted it more than she had wanted to be good. She carried the boy's cap in one hand and told herself she was only going to fetch him.

The clearing was brighter than the wood around it. Above her the cloud had gathered into rolling white curls, and at the centre of them an eye sat open in the air, its pupil as dark as a well and rays of sun spilling out from it on every side. Under it the bracken lay flat in a perfect ring. The boy was there, asleep against a fallen oak, his breath smoking. The eye had kept him warm, or the cloud had, and he woke when Ada said his name.

"Something has to be paid," Ada said, because her grandmother always said that, and her voice shook. She did not know what she meant until the words were out. She set the loaf on the moss and said plainly that she had stolen it. The eye closed, the rays folded back into the cloud, and the boy walked home beside her with his hand in hers. The next morning Ada carried a penny up to Harwood's shop and laid it on the counter before he could ask.
