Hand holding a vial with roses and banner
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A hand grips a glass vial with a golden stopper and beaded chain, framed by purple roses with green leaves and a sprig at the top. An orange ribbon banner across the bottom reads I know my value in black lettering. Bold black outlines and flat, saturated colour fill the design against a pale, blurred background.

The rain had got under the awning again, so Agnes Holloway moved the rose tinctures to the dry end of the trestle and waited for the young man to stop pretending he was interested in the lavender soap. He wanted a love philtre, he said, though he kept his eyes on the bottle rather than on her. Her vial was the blue glass her father had blown in Stourport, stoppered in brass and hung from a beaded chain so customers could watch the rose oil roll. 'Four shillings,' she said. He counted out two and a half and set the coins down like apologies.

'I'll tell you what it does for nothing,' Agnes said. She told him it would make him stop haggling with women who had been measuring their worth longer than he had been alive. He laughed, then didn't. She turned the trestle board so he could read the cloth banner her husband had painted for the stall the spring before he died, the orange ribbon gone soft at the corners: I know my value. Then she closed her hand over the glass, her rings clicking against it, and waited.
He paid the four shillings in full, grumbling, and walked off through the puddles with the bottle buttoned inside his coat. Agnes wrapped the leftover roses in brown paper and tucked the half crown into her apron pocket with the others.
It was not a philtre, only rose water and a little brandy, and it would not make anyone love anybody. But the bottle had never been what she sold.
