Anatomical heart and roses in a triangle
Dotwork · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A detailed anatomical heart with its vessels sits inside an inverted triangle, with three engraved roses clustered over its lower chambers. A dotted circle frames the top of the design. The linework is built from fine stippling and hatching, shaded in greys and black, with a solid red fill behind the roses and teal shading in the triangle.

The roses had to go in last. Thorold insisted on it, tapping the surgeon's plate with a nail-bitten finger. 'A heart is only finished when something has grown over it,' he said, and then he went off down the dark stair to see to his dogs, leaving me alone with the copper and the lamp in the roofless chapel at Hawkmoor, where the wind came through the east window as if it had an appointment.

I worked through the nights because the days were full of masons pulling the south tower down for its stone. The vessels came easily, pale hatching like frost on a pond. The chambers took longer. I stippled them with a point no thicker than a hair until my eyes ran, and each dot seemed to hold a little of the cold. By the third week the heart sat in its triangle of blue-grey wash like something hauled out of the moat, and only the roses were still blank.
On the last night I cut the roses with the sharpest burin in the box. Their petals folded into one another, lower and lower, until the edges looked like the lips of a cup. When I pulled the first proof, the red I had laid by hand had bled into the paper beneath the heart, pooling where it rested. Thorold studied it a long time, then folded it twice and put it inside his coat.
He never came back for the plate. The masons say he walked to the coast with the surgeon's book under his arm, and that the dotted ring above the heart marks where the moon clears the broken wall. I still hear the burin some nights, tapping the copper, asking whether anything has grown over it yet.
