The calm had held the Marigold nine days when Tobias Quill, the second mate, began to hum the same three notes over and over at the wheel. Nobody else could hear them, or so the cook said, but the men who listened too long stopped answering when their names were called. They sat on the coaming with their hands in their laps and watched the water as if it owed them money.

Old Mother Ashdown had cooked on merchant ships for forty years before she took passage home, and she climbed the companionway with her skirts bunched in one fist. She looked at the mate, then at the grey sea, and asked for a candle and a pinch of salt. 'It's the Hush,' she said. 'It gets in through the ears and sits behind the eyes. You cannot pull it out. You can only wake the one it's sitting in.'

She stood square in front of him, raised her hand, pressed thumb to first finger, and snapped them once beside each of his ears. The sound cracked across the deck like a pistol shot, and the gulls lifted off the rail in a white rush. Tobias blinked, asked why the topsails were still furled, and went forward to shout for the braces. Within the hour the wind came out of the north like a door swinging open.

Afterwards the men said the snap had sounded like a bone breaking. Cook kept her candle lit through the next three watches anyway, and whenever someone yawned at the rail she held up her hand and let the fingers click, so that nobody on the Marigold ever again let the Hush find a seat.
