Hand holding a cigarette with lips and smoke
Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a hand with long, pointed nails holding a cigarette up beside a pair of lips, with two wavy lines of smoke rising above. The design uses solid black ink for the lips and nail and shadow areas, with thin outlines for the fingers and wrist. It is entirely black and white on a plain light background, with the hand cropped across the centre of the frame.

The lighter had died twice before Sadie Kell got a flame out of the third match, and by then the man in the corner booth had stopped pretending to read his racing pages. She let the first smoke go slowly, the way her mother had taught her in the back office of the Lantern Street laundry, where nobody ever asked a girl for her opinions. Her nails were lacquered black that week, the only expensive thing she owned, and she tapped them against the tabletop like a telegraph key.

The man called himself Dennis Harrow, though he had given her two other names on the telephone. He wanted the ledger from the Pier Hotel, the one with the councillors who had lost money at the dog track. Sadie had it in her handbag, wrapped in brown paper, and she had already been paid half in a brass coin pressed into her palm. She knew what the other half would cost him. She blew a ring toward the ceiling fan and watched it tear apart.
'You'll have it by Friday,' she said, which was true, because on Thursday she would be on the night train to Hull with a different surname and a clean coat. Harrow leaned in and asked whether she had ever been afraid of anything. She considered the question as carefully as a bad hand of cards. 'Only men who keep their gloves on indoors,' she said. He laughed, and didn't notice the envelope slide from her bag to beneath his saucer.
She left the cigarette burning in the tray when she stood up, its smoke climbing in two thin wavy lines past the mirror, like a signature nobody would ever bother to read.
