Black handwritten lettering tattoo across a person's upper back reading I'll be stuck fixated on one star when the world is crashing down.

Handwritten lyric lettering on upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a block of black handwritten lettering set over five staggered lines of text, reading I'll be stuck fixated on one star when the world is crashing down. The strokes are uneven and slightly slanted, with some letters appearing to be drawn freehand rather than in a formal script. The image is a close, slightly angled phone photo of pale skin with no colour in the ink, and the text fills most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maud had told Dev three times that the cold frames would not survive a north wind, but he stood in the wet grass with his hands jammed in his jacket and talked about the sky as if it owed him money. The radio in the potting shed kept repeating gusts of seventy miles an hour along the coast, and the pylons over the rail cutting hummed like a plucked wire.

He had found a biro in the bench drawer and was writing on the back of an old seed packet, the cheap kind with a cartoon runner bean on the front. Maud read over his shoulder. The same words again and again, in capitals that leaned as if they were running for a bus: stuck, fixated, one star. He said it was from a song his mum used to play in the van, and that she sang it wrong on purpose so he would correct her from the back seat.

The wind took the lid off the nearest frame and sent it cartwheeling across the allotments. They went after it together, Dev swearing, Maud laughing until she had to stop and hold a fence post. When she looked up, a gap had opened in the cloud over the water tower, and there was one star in it, small and unbothered, while the whole town below flickered and dimmed.

She didn't say anything about it. She took the seed packet from Dev, folded it in half, and put it in her pocket with the bean side out, so that whenever she reached for her keys she would feel the ridge of his handwriting against her thumb.
