The snow had sealed the pass by four o'clock, and by seven the only sound in the Hollin Fell inn was the clack of a typewriter upstairs. Ada Preston went up with a lamp and found a stranger from the Carlisle cattle sales pecking at the spare room's desk with two fingers, cursing each time the lowercase e stuck.

His name was Cyril Bent, and the letter he was writing was to a sister in Ludlow he had not spoken to since their father's funeral. Ada pretended not to read over his shoulder, but the sentence he kept striking out and retyping was plain enough. It was the old carter's saying their father had chalked on the wagon boards, the one about how a man could get a long way on the back of every mistake, if he was stubborn enough to carry them.
Ada fetched the sewing oil from the kitchen and a bent hairpin, and between them they freed the stuck typebar while the fire below spat and settled. Cyril typed the line through once more, slowly, letter by letter, and when he reached the end he didn't cross it out.
At first light the plough came grinding up the valley road. Ada found the letter on the hall table, folded twice and sealed, with a single stamp pressed down hard in the corner, and she put it in her apron pocket for the postman.
