The path up to Hollin House was laid with pale stones by the old gardener, and every autumn Mary Cathcart swept the leaves from them with a broom of birch twigs. Nobody had lived in the house since the flood. Its upper windows were boarded, and the turret stood with its slate cap tilted like a man who had taken too much ale.

One November the moon rose full over the rise, and Mary saw a light in the turret window. Her brother Tom said it was only the moon caught in the glass. The next night the light came again, and the night after that. By the third morning the bare pear tree beside the fence had dropped its last leaves, and a ring of frost lay round its roots like a hoop someone had set down and forgotten.

Tom went up that evening with a lantern and a spade, in case it was poachers. He did not come down before dawn. Mary went along the winding path at first light and found the front door standing open, a line of muddy boot prints leading to the fence, and his lantern hung on a post, still lit, with no sign of him at all.

She did not go in. She sat on the low wall with the lantern until the moon went down and the turret window went dark. Then, from somewhere deep in the house, came the sound of a spade being set against a wall, slow and patient, and Tom's voice asking her to fetch the seed potatoes, because the ground was turning and the beds would not dig themselves.
