Victorian house line drawing on a limb
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a three-storey Victorian house with a steep gabled roof, bay windows, a front door set under an arched porch, and a balcony with decorative trim. The linework is a single even black outline with little shading, giving a sketch-like, illustrative look. The design fills most of the frame on a limb, with a little body hair visible at the top edge.

The removal van has already gone, and the key still sticks in the front door the way Dad always said it would. Above you the gable stands black against a sky the colour of wet newsprint. From the bay window of the front room you can see the platform lamps at Halden Road, where the six-fourteen is already sighing in. Nobody has lived in this house since 1987, and it shows only in the way the paint has given up on the bargeboards.

Your father left you the house and a shoebox of timetables, nothing else of value. In the cupboard under the stairs you find a ledger in his square capitals, every train that passed the bottom of the garden logged by the minute for thirty-one years. Beside each entry he has drawn a tiny house with its windows lit or dark. You count the lit ones and realise he was keeping watch on something, or waiting for a signal to change.
On the last page, dated the week before he died, there is one line: the porch needs painting, and she should be told before the frost. You go out and scrape a flake of green from the post with your thumbnail. The six-fourteen slides through, its carriage windows flickering across the wet brick, and you stand there until the last lamp has gone. Then you go back inside and switch on every light in the house.
