Heart, anchor and key flash design
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A line drawing of a heart with a beaded outline and a loop at the top, containing an anchor with a key passing through its centre. Filigree scrolls and leaf-like curls fill the space around the motif. The linework is a single dark outline with no shading, and the drawing sits on cream paper, so the image is black and grey.

Sit down, lad, the four-ten is always late and it'll give me time to finish. You see that iron bench? Your great-grandfather Tomas bolted it down the summer the branch line reached Porthlyn. He was a porter then, with a rule nobody believed until the November of the big storm: whatever came off the last train, someone had to be waiting on the platform to meet it.

That November a woman stepped down from the last carriage with a canvas trunk and a brass key on a faded ribbon round her neck. She said it belonged to the lamp hut at the end of the breakwater, where her father had kept the harbour lights for thirty years before the sea took him. The hut had been padlocked since the war. Tomas walked her down the lane under one umbrella, the rain coming sideways off the bay, and she talked the whole way about gulls and the scrollwork on the old chapel gates, as if she were trying to fill the dark with pretty things.
The key fitted. Inside, behind the rusted lamps, lay a biscuit tin full of letters addressed to the harbour master, every one from a fisherman asking him to keep a light burning for a boat that was running late. None had ever been answered. The woman sat on an upturned crate and read them aloud until the dawn train whistled in, and Tomas, who had never once been asked to wait for anyone, found he could not leave until she had finished.
So that's the rule, lad. Whatever comes off the last train, somebody stands on the platform. Mind the step, it's slippery. There she comes now, you can see her lamps through the mist.
