Tribal dolphin and fish tattoo

Blackwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A large tribal design shows two dolphins and a fish or sea creature, built from bold black outlines and interlocking swirls and spirals. The linework is solid and heavy, with negative space filled in by the skin tone. The ink is entirely black, and the design fills most of the frame against a warm, softly lit skin surface.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pump engine at Wheal Carrow stopped on the second Tuesday of February, and by the Friday the water had climbed to the fortieth fathom. Old Tom Pascoe said the sea wanted its share back. Nobody argued with him. He had lost two brothers to the levels under the cliffs and had earned the right to be wrong about the sea.

That was the winter the dolphins came up the adit. Maggie Trewin, who kept the bakehouse by the count house, saw them first, three grey backs rolling in the leat outside her door, their snouts nudging the iron grate as though they wanted to be let in. My mother always said a creature that swims into the wrong water is either lost or looking for someone. The men of Carrow were lost enough, so Maggie put her shawl on and went up the hill to fetch Tom.

They went down at dusk with one lamp between four of them. The dolphins swam ahead through the flooded drift, turning at every junction, waiting at every fork until the light caught them. At the end of the western level, where no man had cut since the old pit closed, the water ran in spirals against the rock, round and round like a thing being wound on a spool. Beneath it lay a seam of tin as bright as a sprat's flank, and a fish longer than a man's arm hung motionless in the current, watching them with one eye like a coin.

They did not take the tin. Tom knelt and put his hand flat on the cold wall and said the names of his brothers, and the dolphins turned once and were gone. The next morning the pump coughed back into life, and Maggie found a single grey scale stuck to the grate, the size of a thumbnail, which she kept in the flour tin for the rest of her days.
