Heart-shaped chocolate box with bow and flower
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows an open heart-shaped box of chocolates tied with a pink and red ribbon bow, with a red flower and green leaves at the upper right. Two small hearts sit below the box, and white scalloped lace edging runs around the lid and base. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with smooth black and pink shading and bright red, pink, teal and yellow fills against bare skin.

Dear Morag,

The boat came over from Oban on Tuesday with the crates, and the lid of the big heart box had split in transit, so I've had to glue the ribbon back on with the good tape. The white lace paper is still crisp round the edges, and the bow is only a little squashed. Your mother would have tutted. Inside are sixteen pieces, the violet creams and the rose ones you like, and the bottom layer still smells faintly of the pear drops that came in the wrong tin.
Mr Gillies from the post office asked after you again. He wants to know whether the Glasgow buyers will take the island's sea-salt toffee for the Christmas fair, and I told him you'd sort it out, because you always do. I haven't told him the truth, which is that I've been sitting at the back counter most evenings with the ledger open and no sums in it.
I keep the two little heart boxes on the shelf by the window, the ones the lad from the mainland left behind with his name written inside the lid. Nobody has come back for them. This morning the red flower came up by the step, the one the gulls keep trampling, and I took it as a sign that I should stop waiting and send the big box after all.
So it's yours. Eat the rose creams first, before the sea air softens them, and write back and tell me the bow still holds.
Love, Isla
