Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A bold, colour tattoo of a cat face in the style of Hello Kitty, with a red bow, a blue diamond on the forehead and yellow sugar skull style flower patterns around the eyes. Purple flowers with green leaves frame the top and bottom of the design. The thick black outlines are solid and even, and the flat colour fills are bright red, blue, yellow, purple and green on pale skin, with no visible shading.

The box was already shedding marigold petals when Dolores handed it up to me at the Tuesday stop, so I knew she had been holding it on her lap since dawn. Inside lay a sugar skull shaped like a cat, its ears wide and its black outline thick as a fence post. A red tin bow sat on its head, and a blue diamond glinted on its forehead. Its eyes were yellow flowers ringed in red hearts, and purple blossoms with green leaves framed it top and bottom.

"Pilar wanted the cat to ride out to the cemetery at Santa Inés," Dolores said, with the flat certainty of a woman who had argued with a stubborn girl and lost. "She said it had a jewel to pay the fare." I told her the cat could ride up front with me, and that the diamond would be safe as long as I didn't brake too hard on the washboard.

The road ran forty miles across the flats, white with salt and shimmering like spilt milk. Halfway there the wind took the tin bow and rattled it against the windscreen, and I laughed out loud alone in the cab. I thought of Pilar at nine years old, wearing that same bow in her hair and insisting that the cat was the only creature in the world who understood her.

At the cemetery gate I set the box on the wooden cross where Dolores had told me to leave it. The diamond caught the noon sun and threw a small blue light across the grave, and the cat grinned up at the empty road as if it had already paid its fare.
