Heart with tribal swirls on the upper chest
Chest · Colour · Photo
A blue heart sits at the centre of the design, with a stylised pattern of interlocking angular lines inside it that reads as a W or double V. Black tribal swirls with blue accents curl outwards on either side of the heart. The linework is bold and the blue and grey shading gives the heart some depth, while the image is a close crop of bare skin on the chest.

By the third week of August the Blenheim trees start dropping their heaviest fruit before anyone has the sense to pick it, and you are the one walking the rows at six with a bucket on your hip, counting bruises. Dessa from the packing shed says the wasps have got into the Conference pears again. She hands you a tin of blue marker paint and tells you to daub every windfall so the lads don't waste their time on them.

The orchard runs down to a brook, and past the brook is the old wall where the Parr brothers hung wire for the cherries before the war. The evening wind comes off the hill in long loops that flatten the grass into patterns if you stand still long enough to read them. You start seeing the same curls everywhere: in the webs strung between the plum props, in the swallows turning over the far hedge, in the coil of the hose that feeds the cider press. And on the lid of the crate Dessa keeps padlocked, a heart woven from split hazel, with two V's locking hand to hand inside it like people who have stopped arguing.
On the last morning of the month you paint a windfall and find, underneath it in the wet grass, a second apple, untouched and bright as a coin. You carry it up to the shed. Dessa is sitting on the step with her boots off and her eyes shut. She takes the apple, bites it, and says the old trees always hold one back for whoever is still standing there at the end of the season.
She puts the blue tin in your hands without opening her eyes. You crouch by the crate, dip the brush, and make the first stroke of a W. It comes out wet and dark, and it stays.
