Winged knot tattoo on the lower back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black tattoo of stylised wings sweeps outwards from a central knot-like diamond motif with curling swirls beneath. The linework is bold and solid in black ink with no visible shading or grey tones. The tattoo sits centred on the lower back, filling the frame against smooth skin.

The Hollin Wren came down the Severn in March with a cracked tiller and a load of wool nobody had paid for. Her skipper, Tom Aske, was laid up with a cough, so his daughter Nell steered her past Upton and into the rough water above the weir, where the current pulled like a dog on a rope.

At Tewkesbury lock lived an old knotter called Mags Dury, who tied the tow-lines for every boat on the reach. She looked at the wool, then at Nell's hands, and said a knot was only a promise made with rope. She showed Nell the diamond knot, one strand going over and under itself until it closed on its own middle, and told her to work it into the tiller's loop. The swirls, she said, were for turning, and the wings were for lifting, but a boat could not rise unless the centre held first.
The weir took them broadside at dusk. Nell felt the Wren lean, heard the wool groan in its sacks, and did the only thing left to her: she shouted the knot into the wind as if it were a name. The loop bit. The tiller came round, and the barge lifted its bows as though the water had given it wings, sliding over the lip of the weir with a sound like a long breath let out.
Morning found the Wren moored under willows, the wool dry and the tiller straight. Nell cut the cord from the loop and kept the little diamond of it in her pocket. Mags never asked for payment. She only asked, when Nell next came through the lock, whether the river had been kind, and Nell said it had been fair, which Mags said was better.
