Hello Kitty sugar skull design
Mixed · Flash
A cream Hello Kitty face is decorated in sugar skull style, with a large pink bow, red roses, turquoise and yellow flowers, and purple blossoms. Cobweb patterns fill the ears, and the eyes and nose are outlined in ornate black and turquoise frames. The bold black outlines and flat, saturated colour fill sit against a plain black background.

The bow arrived before the cat did. Nell found it wedged in the postern gate of Carrick Hollow, a great pink ribbon knotted round a stone that had come loose from the curtain wall, and from the dew on it she knew it had been carried up the hill that morning. Nobody in the village kept a cat that wore a bow. Old Mrs Pennant swore the castle had been empty since the Parliamentary men burned the hall, and that its ghosts were the sort who bothered with paper and ink, not ribbons.

She went up the spiral stair with her lantern because the sky was turning the colour of wet slate and her mother had forbidden her the headland after dark. The keep smelled of sheep and old smoke. Cobwebs hung from the arrow slits in grey sheets, and in the chapel, where the roof had fallen in, someone had swept a clear floor and set out a row of sugar skulls on a flat stone. Each was white as candle wax and painted with turquoise petals and red roses, and the largest had black ears lined with spider silk and a bow as wide as a tea tray.
A cat sat on the altar, washing a paw. Her face was the cream of the skulls, her eyes framed in squares edged with gold lace, and when she turned her head the ribbon shifted as though it had been tied that minute. "You're late," she said, in a voice like a kettle lid. Nell dropped the lantern. It did not go out. The light spilled across the skulls, and one by one their turquoise flowers lit like windows in a town at night.
The skulls were for the dead, the cat explained, and the dead were owed one ribbon a year from whoever kept the keys. Nell's grandmother had kept them. Nell untied the faded blue ribbon from her own plait and laid it at the cat's feet. The cat considered it, then nudged it beneath the altar with one paw. "Blue will do for a Tuesday," she said, and the chapel went still, the cobwebs trembling in a draught Nell could not feel.
