Hello Kitty sugar skull design
Colour · Flash
A coloured illustration of a cat face in the style of Hello Kitty, with sugar skull decoration painted across the white face. The bold black outline carries a pink bow with yellow centre, a red flower above the ear, purple and blue flowers on the cheeks and nose, and spider webs in the ears. Flat areas of pink, red, blue, yellow and purple sit against the white background with no shading.

The snow has found the gap in your collar, and the Forty Turns still ask for another hour of climbing. Where the path bends round a boulder, a white cat sits with a pink bow the size of a dinner plate, watching you the way a landlord watches a late tenant. You stop. Marta, the muleteer who taught you the road, warned you about this stone, and you laughed at her.

'It keeps the crossing book,' she had said, 'and it never lets anyone pass without a name.' The cat's ears are laced with spider webs that your lantern catches and holds, silver and fine. A red flower is pinned above one ear, its petals ruffled like a lace collar. When you say your name, the cat yawns, showing nothing but dark inside, and steps down from the boulder as if the matter is settled.
It walks ahead, and each time the drifts swallow the track it stops and waits. The yellow flower at the centre of its bow stays bright when everything else has gone grey. Blue blossoms painted across its cheeks seem to hold a little warmth, and the purple petals at its brow turn slowly whenever the wind changes. You count the turns aloud, because Marta told you to, and the cat's tail ticks once for each.
At the last turn the wind drops dead. There is a hut with one candle in its window and Marta's old mule tethered outside, chewing hay as though it has never been away. The cat sits on the step beside a tin of sugar skulls, each painted with blue eyes, and nudges one toward you with its nose. You take it. When you look back, the cat is gone, and the prints in the snow lead down the mountain, small and neat, as though someone expects you to come back the same way.
