Henna-style lattice design on the back of a hand
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
The design covers the back of the hand, fingers and wrist with dark, fine linework forming lattice panels, scalloped borders, dotted lines and symmetrical geometric motifs. The pattern is solid black with no shading, set against pale skin and a white fabric background. The composition is centred on the hand, with the design running from the fingertips over the wrist, and the dark navy nails are not part of the design.

The mason's daughter was the one who counted the holes. Her father had cut the stone screen for the east window of Carrow Keep the spring before the bad winter, and every morning she stood beneath it with an empty bucket and counted the diamonds of light that fell across the flagstones, because she was certain the number changed when nobody was looking.

The steward wanted the screen knocked out. The wind came through its diamonds and the kitchen was always cold, he said, and a good solid wall would keep the lord warm. Her father told him that a wall would keep the cold in just as well as the warmth. He was sent to the quarry for a month and came back with his hands split, and the screen stayed, and the steward never spoke to him again.
The winter came early, and the gate was barred. Snow filled the courtyard to the height of a man, and the steward's boy went out after a goat and did not come back. The girl went to the east window with a lantern. She set it on the sill and traced the lattice with her finger until she found the small dots her father had pricked along the scalloped border, one after another, leading out through the wall where the masonry was thinnest. She walked the dots all night and brought the boy home by the first grey light.
The screen is still standing, though the keep has fallen down around it. The children from the village come up in summer to count the diamonds. Each of them swears she has the right number, and each of them is sure it changed while she was looking away.
