Black henna-style designs on hands with silver rings
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are shown palm down against a white background, with many stacked silver rings, a silver pendant necklace and gold and red patterned nail art. Black ornamental designs of mandala and paisley shapes cover the back of the hand and extend toward the wrist, with fine, detailed linework and solid dark areas. The composition is close and centred on the hands, with the jewellery and designs filling most of the frame.

Dear Nell, the paisley mould cracked again this morning, the one my uncle carved from pear wood before his hands gave out. I have bound it in wire and told Mr Oyelaran it will hold for one more pour, which is a lie, but a kind one.

Yesterday a woman came in off the Pune bus carrying a cloth bag of loose rings, every one bent out of shape from years of being worn in the heat and dragged off at night. She wanted them melted down and made into a set she could wear without thinking about them. I told her a set like that is only ever made by marking the metal first, a little at a time, with a fine point, the way you would draw on a palm before the paste sets. She laughed and said her grandmother had done the same with a sewing needle and a saucer of ash.
So I sat with her for three hours scratching a mandala into a sheet of tin, petals opening outward, each leaf a touch heavier than the last, until the lines crowded together and made the dark patches that fill the gaps. When I rubbed charcoal over the tin the whole thing came up black as the ink the aunties use at weddings.
She took the sheet home rolled inside her shawl. I have kept the offcut, the one with the paisley tail that refused to close. Come in March and I will show you. Tell your mother the goat is not my fault. Love, Tamsin.
