Hey Y'all lettering within a Texas outline
Black and grey · Flash
A black marker drawing of an outline of the state of Texas, with the words Hey Y'all written in bold, upright block capitals inside and across the shape. The lines are clean and even with uniform stroke weight, and the lettering is set tightly so the words fill the outline. The image is a simple two-tone drawing on a cream paper background, with a marker pen visible in the top right corner.

Forty-one people had driven in for the class of 1989 reunion, and most of them stood in the school car park squinting at one another, trying to match a face to a name that had gone soft with thirty years of use.

Her grandmother used to say Texas was too big to be a place. It was a promise you made at the county line and kept until you reached the far edge. Ruth had believed that until she was nineteen, when she drove the length of the Panhandle alone with one bad tyre and a radio that only found the gospel station. She came back with a sunburnt neck and nothing much to say about it.
Benny Oakes found her by the drawing. He had never once said hello to anyone in the corridors, and he said nothing now, only pointed at the outline where the lettering spilled past the Rio Grande. 'Got the shape off a road atlas for a science fair,' he said. 'Never could fit the words in.' Ruth showed him how to let the y'all run down into the Gulf, and he laughed, a short sound like a gate opening.
By nine the lights in the gym were going off one at a time, and the greeting stood in black ink across the whole state, from the Sabine to El Paso. Benny signed the bottom corner with his full name, then wrote underneath, in smaller letters, that he was sorry it had taken so long to say it.
