Black scrolling floral flourish design
Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing of an ornamental flourish made of curling scrolls, tendrils and small leaf-like swirls, with a few dots scattered along the stems. The linework is solid and uniform in weight, with tapering tips, and the design is filled with flat black shapes and no shading. The composition is an asymmetric spray rising from the lower centre, set against a plain white background.

Dear Win, the frost came early to the back garden this year, and I have been out with the shears every morning since, cutting the bindweed back from the wall where Father's clematis used to be. You will laugh, but I keep finding his hand in it. The tendrils come off the stems in exactly the curl he drew for us at the kitchen table, one long stroke that tapers to nothing, then a little knot at the end, as if the vine had thought better of leaving.

Mrs Tennant from the chapel asked me on Sunday whether I would take on the lettering for the memorial board, and I said I would, provided she let me do the border myself. She had no idea what I meant. I think she pictured me with a ruler. I spent the whole of Monday with the nib and the ink pot, copying the swirls out of the back of his old copybook, the ones with the dots scattered along the stems like seed heads. I made a mess of the third one and had to start again.
On the last page of that book there is a spray rising from the bottom corner, lopsided, curling off to the right as though something had tugged it. Father never explained it. He only wrote underneath, in pencil, "Let the line go where it wants, then bring it home." I have been trying to do exactly that all week, and mostly I have managed.
Come on Saturday if you can. Bring the good scissors. The clematis wants cutting back, and I want you to see the board before the varnish goes on.
Love, Ada
