Hibiscus flowers on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows three hibiscus blooms, two yellow-orange and one pink, with a red bud and clusters of green leaves rising up the outer thigh. The petals are shaded with soft gradients and fine veining, giving a realistic, painterly look. The flowers are arranged diagonally across the leg, with the largest pink bloom at the lower end and the bud at the top.

It went against the scullery window in Moss Side, where the glass ran with condensation from October to March. All winter it dropped leaves and sulked, and Nan talked to it the way she talked to the coal man, politely and without much hope. A neighbour brought a pink one over the wall from Lewisham in a jam jar, and that one was sulkier still, so they put it out by the coal bunker and forgot it.

In May the orange bud at the top of the stem swelled and split. Hibiscus flowers only last a day, so the three of them sat on the back step from breakfast until dusk, watching it open and wilt by inches, while the whole street drifted over the wall to look. Mavis cried, though she said it was the pollen. By evening the petals had gone papery at the edges and Nan picked up the fallen one from the step. Mavis pressed it into her hymnal, between the pages of Ruth, and it stayed there, brown as tea, until the house was sold.
