Colour tattoo of a red poppy, a yellow sunflower, blue and purple daisies and pink blooms across the ankle and top of the foot, in a neo-traditional botanical style.

Poppy and sunflower bouquet on a foot

Neo-trad · Ankle · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a red poppy with seed pods, a large yellow sunflower, a blue daisy, a purple aster and pink flowers, with green leaves and stems linking the blooms. Bold dark outlines define the petals, and soft shading gives the poppy and sunflower depth. Vivid red, yellow, blue and pink ink dominate, and the arrangement wraps from the ankle down across the top of the foot.

Right, sit down before the kettle boils over, because you'll want to hear this properly. Old Maud Penhallow kept the seed shop at the bottom of Quay Street, the one with the green door that never shut true. Every February she'd walk out along the harbour wall with a paper bag of poppy seed in her coat, and the gulls would follow her like they'd been paid to.

Nobody thought much of it until the spring the herring boats came in short. The fishermen blamed the weather, the council blamed the fishermen, and Maud blamed nobody. She just kept tipping seed into the cracks between the granite blocks, kneeling there with her knees in the wet, pressing each one down with a thumb like she was tucking a child in.

By June the wall was red. Poppies first, loud and crumpled as tissue paper, and then down by the slipway the sunflowers came up taller than a man, each one turning its big yellow face to follow the sun across the bay. Blue daisies crept in from the lobster pots. Pink ones settled wherever the salt couldn't reach. The harbourmaster came to complain about the mess and went home with a bunch of asters under his arm and no complaint left in him.

When Maud died that autumn, they found the shop ledger with one line at the back: Seeds for the wall, paid in full. Nobody ever worked out who she'd been paying. But the poppy pods still rattle on the wall every August, and if you listen, they sound like someone counting out change.
