Hibiscus with Polynesian tribal bands design
Botanical · Mixed · Flash
A large hibiscus flower with shaded petals in black, red, orange and yellow sits at the centre of the design. Black tribal bands with bold solid shapes and fine patterned detail curve around it, and a small plumeria blossom sits at the lower left. The linework is crisp and the colour is applied in soft gradients on white paper.

The relief boat was three days late, and by the second evening you had rationed the paraffin to the last tin. Mr Tuiasosopo, who had kept the light before you and still walked the reef path each morning with his hands clasped behind him, told you the lamp was a patient animal that would forgive a missed meal but never a missed night. So you climbed the iron stairs at dusk with a rag, a bottle of oil and the wind shoving at the glass.

Halfway up, the lamp room door had jammed open, and a hibiscus had blown in from the terrace garden. Its red petals had gone dark at the edges and it lay on the brass rail like something dropped by a careless hand. You picked it up. Its throat was yellow and stained orange, and when you turned it the beam swept past and threw a slow black curve across the whitewash, bands of shadow breaking into hooks and diamonds the way the carved prow of the village canoe did in the afternoon sun.
You wiped the lens, trimmed the wick and watched the light go out over the water to where the reef broke white. Somewhere past it, you told yourself, the supply boat was turning round in fog, and it would come in at first light with its engine coughing and its crew swearing at the tide.
At dawn the boat did come. You had slept on the landing with the petal folded inside your logbook, and the crew hauled the paraffin up the steps without a word. The last entry you made that night was the hour the lamp had been lit, and beside it, in your cramped hand, the name of the flower, so whoever came after would know the light had been kept.
